The European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee scrutinises employment policies and measures to reduce social inequality, such as by tackling unemployment. ECR MEPs believe that that employment legislation is best decided at a national level and that any European initiative must respect the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality.
The ECR Group is committed to better regulation and fully supports REFIT as a welcome first step in reducing the burden of regulation on businesses and eliminating barriers to growth and job creation. We believe that cutting red tape should deliver proportionate, evidence-based protection for workers, while ensuring that businesses can grow, create jobs and boost competitiveness. We will ensure that EU legislators fulfil their responsibility to ensure that any regulations or proposals put forward encourage job creation and do not impose disproportionate or ill-considered burdens on business.
The ECR Group believes that increased attention on boosting the competitiveness of SMEs and micro-enterprises is crucial. We will always strive to ensure that any measures introduced do not place excessive burdens on SMEs and micro-enterprises such as excessive health and safety legislation. The ECR will continue to push for lighter regimes for micro-enterprises and SMEs and call for action in the fields of what have been identified as the ‘Top Ten’ most burdensome laws for SMEs, including the working time and temporary agency directives. ECR MEPs believe it is important that an entrepreneurial spirit is nurtured from an early age right through to university and that every effort is made to make it easier for sound businesses to survive.
