The ECR Group in the European Parliament expresses its continued concerns over the EU’s COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy. During today’s plenary debate with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, several ECR MEPs demanded greater transparency from the Commission regarding the terms of the contracts it negotiated with the pharmaceutical sector and to explain why the vaccine rollout has been unacceptably slow across Europe.

A new study on EU climate policy co-commissioned by the ECR Group finds that it is practically impossible to generate sufficient energy with wind and solar energy as there is not enough available land to cover all electricity demand. The study, titled ’Road to EU Climate Neutrality by 2050’ advises the EU to embark on a “Nuclear Renaissance” programme in trying to achieve its climate objectives.

On behalf of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) in the European Parliament, ECR Co-Chairmen Ryszard Legutko and Raffaele Fitto call for the European Parliament to hold the Commission to account over the management of its vaccination strategy. Specifically, the ECR Group demands greater transparency from the Commission regarding the contracts negotiated, its export authorisation scheme, and its public communication strategy. The opaqueness of the Commission’s decision-making on these issues, which fundamentally affect all European citizens, must urgently be addressed.

Today, the Council and the European Parliament reached an agreement on the future of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The changes will cut bureaucracy around grant applications, and give the EIT’s eight Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) more leeway in how they spend their funds.

The second revision of the Regulation on the Fund for the European Aid to the most deprived (FEAD) regarding the specific measures for addressing the COVID-19 crisis, will allow Member States to use additional resources and request up to 100% co-financing rate.

Today, MEPs held a debate on how to achieve an effective policy legacy for the European Year of Cultural Heritage, which will be followed by votes on Tuesday and Wednesday. The own initiative report lead by the ECR coordinator for the Committee on Culture and Education and the Latvian ex-minister of Culture, Dace Melbārde, is calling for a more integrated approach to cultural heritage. This involves the equal treatment of tangible, intangible, natural and digital heritage equally.

The European Conservatives and Reformists Group strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest of leading Russian opposition figure and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, upon his return to Moscow on 17 January. As a result, the ECR Group has filed an immediate resolution in the European Parliament calling for swift action to be taken against those directly responsible.
