Duda: The EU needs an energy policy that will make use of sources available today

The EU’s energy policy should seek to make use of energy sources that are available now in order to ensure the economy can grow, Andrzej Duda MEP said today in a debate with President Juncker ahead of an EU summit on energy and foreign affairs later this month.

The EU’s energy policy should seek to make use of energy sources that are available now in order to ensure the economy can grow, Andrzej Duda MEP said today in a debate with President Juncker ahead of an EU summit on energy and foreign affairs later this month.

Mr Duda also called for the EU to ensure the ceasefire in Eastern Ukraine is totally respected, and called on all EU countries to stand firm in support of Ukraine, against the imperial ambitions of Russia.

Speaking in the debate, he said:

“We import 53 percent of our energy, and our energy is 40 percent more expensive than in the USA. If we do not assume a reasonable policy on energy but instead focus purely on decarbonisation, we will lose thousands of jobs and further increase prices.

“EU funds and policy should be aimed towards enabling states to make use of the energy sources at their disposal now, and making use of new technologies. The EU should be sovereign when it comes to energy and this means increasing production and making the most out of our own sources of energy.

“On Ukraine, we need to make sure that the Minsk agreement is respected – not only partially, but totally. Only last night Ukrainian positions were bombarded by heavy weapons. The Council must stand together and assist Ukraine in a spirit of solidarity to show the strength of the EU against the imperial ambitions of Russia.”
