ECR Co-Chairman Nicola Procaccini has sharply criticised the latest postponement of a European Parliament resolution on the automotive industry.
The proposal, tabled by ECR MEPs Ondřej Krutílek, Carlo Fidanza and Alexandr Vondra, aimed to establish a clear parliamentary position on the direction of EU car policy.
“I’m appalled by yet another delay,” Procaccini said following the Conference of Presidents in Brussels. “The EPP and the groups on the left have once again refused to take responsibility.”
The resolution has been repeatedly pushed back from one plenary to the next, as some groups fear a majority of MEPs would oppose the current framework – particularly the punitive fines imposed on car manufacturers under the EU’s emissions regulation.
“The reality is that the current system is damaging our industry,” Procaccini warned. “The CO₂ penalties alone could cost manufacturers €17 billion. That’s a direct threat to jobs and innovation.”
He dismissed the justification that the Parliament should wait for the Commission to amend the regulation: “The promised revision hasn’t even happened yet.”
“We need a change of course – and the Parliament must finally say so,” he concluded.
