ECR Group discusses migration and security with Commissioner Magnus Brunner

European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner joined the ECR Group meeting in Strasbourg for an exchange with Members on migration, border management and internal security.

Welcoming Commissioner Brunner, ECR Co-Chair Nicola Procaccini underlined that centre-right policies are delivering results on migration and security, while much of the left continues to underestimate the concerns currently at the forefront of citizens’ minds.

During the discussion, Commissioner Brunner pointed to a substantial fall in illegal border crossings, down by around 55 per cent over the past two years and by a further third so far in 2026. He stressed, however, that more needs to be done.

Among the priorities discussed were a stronger Frontex, a more active European migration policy and closer migration diplomacy with third countries, an effective EU emergency-response framework and further work on return hubs.

Commissioner Brunner also highlighted progress with the EU’s new Entry/Exit System, describing it as one of the most advanced border-management systems in the world. He noted that around 1,800 individuals considered security risks had already been refused entry.

The exchange also focused on internal security. Members discussed the growing challenge posed by drones and the need to strengthen counter-drone capabilities following incidents in several European countries, as well as the fight against international organised drug crime.

The meeting concluded with a wide-ranging discussion between Commissioner Brunner and ECR Members on how Europe can further strengthen its external borders, improve returns and respond more effectively to emerging security threats.
