The European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament welcomes the adoption of a Resolution of the European Parliament on the situation in Russia, condemning the attempted assassination of prominent Russian opposition politician and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny.
The ECR Group has already called for a fair and combined international response to this case. We believe Mr. Navalny’s poisoning should be classified as a breach of international law, not a domestic matter of the Russian Federation.
ECR Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Anna Fotyga has stated, “the case should send a strong signal to EU institutions and Member States that joint projects with Russia, especially North Stream2, should immediately be stopped.”
Speaking after the vote, Ms Fotyga MEP added:
“We strongly condemn the violence against leading Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalnyi, and we call for a complete and transparent investigation by international institutions. We urge all international actors to respond adequately to this case as the offensive use of any military-grade nerve agent is unacceptable.”
