The ECR Working Group on the Competitiveness of the EU

Businesses are drowning in red tape. Innovation is stalling. Investment is leaving. Meanwhile, global competitors are gaining ground while Europe ties itself in bureaucratic knots.

On 8 July 2025, the ECR launched the Working Group on the Competitiveness of EU Businesses to combat the bureaucracy stifling Europe’s economic potential and advocate for smarter, results-driven policies.

The Co-Presidents of the working group are Ondřej Krutílek (CZ) and Beatrice Timgren (SE).

Speaking at the inaugural meeting, the co-presidents set out the working group’s objectives.

“We are launching this working group because Europe’s competitiveness is under strain across different policy areas, and it is struggling to rebuild its strong position on the global stage. The ECR Group must be clear: competitiveness is not a buzzword. It is measured by tangible outcomes. This working group will serve as a strategic tool to better coordinate our efforts across committees, countries and policy areas, ensuring a coherent and effective approach to restoring Europe’s economic dynamism,” said Ondřej Krutílek, Co-President of the working group.

“This working group is a strategic platform to scrutinise the Commission’s initiatives, cut through Brussels red tape, and strengthen the ECR Group’s influence on policies that matter for Europe’s competitiveness. As demand grows for realism, innovation and less regulation, our ideas are gaining ground,” said Working Group Co-President Beatrice Timgren.
