ECR Rapporteur Charlie Weimers is delighted that the first ever European Parliament report on EU-Taiwan relations received such broad support from colleagues across all political groups. In an own initiative report voted today, MEPs of the Foreign Affairs committee recommend that the HR/VP and the Commission intensify EU-Taiwan relations and pursue a comprehensive, enhanced partnership. An impact assessment, public consultation and scoping exercise on a Bilateral Investment Agreement with Taiwan must be initiated before the end of 2021.

ECR Group Co-Chairs Legutko & Fitto: Commission applying double standards in approving recovery plan

The European Commission's refusal to approve Hungary's recovery plans until legal reforms have been carried out in the member state and a guarantee given that corruption cases will be investigated has been met with incomprehension by the Co-Chairmen of the European Conservative and Reformists Group (ECR) in the European Parliament, Prof Ryszard Legutko and Raffaele Fitto. According to the Conservatives, governments that are critical or even opposed to further federalisation of the EU are penalised more than others. The ECR Group has long accused the Commission of applying such double standards.

Rebuilding fish stocks in the Mediterranean Sea: Don’t pass the buck to the fishermen

“Don’t pass the buck to the fishermen. Protecting the supply of fish in the sea is a task that must involve all concerned stakeholders,” says ECR Rapporteur Raffaele Stancanelli. The statement follows the unanimous approval of his report in the Committee on Fisheries of the European Parliament, which detailed the need to rebuild fish stocks in the Mediterranean. For Stancanelli, sustainability of the marine environment and its fish can only be achieved through the controlled use of resources rather than the prohibition of all fishing activity.

European Parliament adopts the European Defence Fund

Today, the European Parliament adopted the European Defence Fund (EDF) for 2021-2021. The Fund will allow the EU to design fully interoperable and innovative defence technologies of high quality more efficiently, at a lower cost and avoid unnecessary duplication between countries. It is estimated that through better coordination, as foreseen, Member States will save between 25 to 100 billion euros per year.

The European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament (ECR Group) remains sceptical towards the structuring and planned course of the Conference of the Future of Europe. ECR Co-Chairmen Ryszard Legutko (Poland) and Raffaele Fitto (Italy) are unimpressed by the digital platform of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE). The multilingual platform was designed as a central hub for citizens’ contribution and was launched today during a press conference in the Commission. However, like other smaller Groups from across the spectrum in the European Parliament, the ECR Group only holds an “observer” status in the Conference’s Executive Board and is not fully represented. The ECR Group considers the procedure decided by the Executive Board to be highly questionable from a democratic point of view and harmful in pursuit of a higher functioning European Union.

Today, the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee adopted ECR MEP Angel Dzhambazki’s report with recommendations to the European Commission to strengthen sports’ event organisers’ rights in the digital environment. The report calls on the Commission to enable immediate enforcement of rights for live sports events, including the possibility to issue injunctions requesting the real-time blocking of access to or removal of unauthorised online live sports content. A new study on EU climate policy co-commissioned by the ECR Group finds that it is practically impossible to generate sufficient energy with wind and solar energy as there is not enough available land to cover all electricity demand. The study, titled ’Road to EU Climate Neutrality by 2050’ advises the EU to embark on a “Nuclear Renaissance” programme in trying to achieve its climate objectives.

ECR calls for transparency from the Commission around the collective European vaccination strategy

On behalf of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) in the European Parliament, ECR Co-Chairmen Ryszard Legutko and Raffaele Fitto call for the European Parliament to hold the Commission to account over the management of its vaccination strategy. Specifically, the ECR Group demands greater transparency from the Commission regarding the contracts negotiated, its export authorisation scheme, and its public communication strategy. The opaqueness of the Commission’s decision-making on these issues, which fundamentally affect all European citizens, must urgently be addressed.

Today, MEPs held a debate on how to achieve an effective policy legacy for the European Year of Cultural Heritage, which will be followed by votes on Tuesday and Wednesday. The own initiative report lead by the ECR coordinator for the Committee on Culture and Education and the Latvian ex-minister of Culture, Dace Melbārde, is calling for a more integrated approach to cultural heritage. This involves the equal treatment of tangible, intangible, natural and digital heritage equally.

The European Conservatives and Reformists Group strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest of leading Russian opposition figure and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, upon his return to Moscow on 17 January.
