Counter-terror and informal meeting of EU Heads of State and Government

The parliament will hold a debate ahead of Thursday’s meeting of EU leaders to discuss the EU’s response to the ongoing terror threat. ECR Chairman Syed Kamall will talk about how EU countries can work together not just to fight terrorists but also to exchange methods for helping to prevent radicalisation. Mr Kamall wrote on the topic in the Wall Street Journal at the end of last week.

The parliament will also vote on a resolution on countering terrorism following a debate last month. In the debate ECR Home Affairs Spokesman Timothy Kirkhope talked about the need for a pragmatic approach to a proposal he is steering through the parliament to put in place an EU-wide Passenger Name Records system.

Syed Kamall will hold his Strasbourg press briefing on Tuesday morning and will be available for comment at the European Council meeting on Thursday.

EU economy

EU leaders will also discuss the Eurozone at their meeting on Thursday and Syed Kamall will address the need for honesty about the future direction Economic and Monetary Union will take, during his speech in the parliament.

ISIL

MEPs will discuss the humanitarian situation caused by ISIL in Iraq and Syria with Federica Mogherini, and vote on a resolution. ECR Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Tannock will speak in the debate.

Ukraine

The parliament will be updated by Federica Mogherini on the situation in Eastern Ukraine, following a visit by the French and German leaders last week and unsuccessful efforts to find a ceasefire. ECR Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Tannock is also concerned about the growing humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

Country of Origin labelling for meat

Mandatory country of origin labelling (CoOL) is now placed on most fresh meat products, but MEPs are looking at whether there is a way of extending this labelling to processed meat products. Julie Girling, the ECR environment and food safety spokesman, believes that labelling processed meats will help restore consumer confidence, particularly in light of the recent horse meat scandal. To allay concerns that such labelling may be expensive for producers, this resolution calls on the Commission to undertake additional assessments on how CoOL could be implemented proportionately and cost-effectively.
