A rural renaissance is possible through cohesion policy

The EU’s cohesion policy can lead the renewal and recovery of rural communities by targeting long-term investments and integrating policy more effectively.

That’s the message from ECR coordinator on the Committee on Regional Development, Denis Nesci MEP, as he presented his report on ‘Strengthening rural areas in the EU through cohesion policy’ to Parliament.

The own-initiative report was adopted by a large majority today.

Mr Nesci said the vote would be “a strong signal to hundreds of thousands of rural communities waiting a long time for Europe to react.”

Mr Nesci said:

“For too long, these areas have suffered from a deluge of crises — isolation, depopulation, poor connectivity, limited access to essential services, demographic aging and employment difficulties, just to name some of the most prominent ones.

“These areas may be struggling economically but they are rich in culture, biodiversity, identity and — today more than ever — they represent prime assets for producing energy and enhancing food security.

“Living in a rural area should not mean having to make do with fewer opportunities.

“We need a cohesion policy focused on investing in infrastructure, supporting rural businesses, promoting sustainable tourism, strengthening resilience, encouraging the role of women and facilitating the return of young people to their land.

“Supporting rural areas represents a concrete investment for the future of Europe. It is a clear signal to our citizens: we have not forgotten you.”
