Boosting EU support for defence investment

In recent months, unidentified drones have repeatedly breached the airspace of several EU countries.

These incidents, widely believed to come from Russia, are part of a broader hybrid strategy to test Europe’s air defences, erode public trust, and disrupt economic activity.

As part of the ReArm Europe Plan, an agreement was reached this week on the Defence Mini-Omnibus, led by ECR MEP Rihards Kols. The deal allows the EU to use existing funds for defence-related projects — without creating new programmes or bureaucracy.

“This is more than a legal adjustment— it shows that the EU is taking defence investment seriously and acting quickly in response to today’s security challenges,” said MEP Rihards Kols.

Together with initiatives like the European Drone Defence Initiative and the Drone Wall, and by supporting Ukraine’s defence industry, the EU is taking concrete steps to strengthen its resilience against hybrid threats, protect its citizens and borders, and ensure freedom and security across the continent.
