Following the tragic death of Colombian conservative presidential candidate Senator Miguel Uribe, ECR MEP Carlo Fidanza, Vice-President of the EuroLat Parliamentary Assembly and Head of the Italian Delegation of the ECR Group, has strongly condemned President Petro’s regime, holding it politically responsible.
Senator Uribe, a leading conservative voice in Colombia, was shot during a rally on 7 June and succumbed to his injuries after two months in hospital.
“This is a very sad day for millions of Colombians and for all those who fight for the cause of freedom and democracy in Latin America,” Fidanza said. “President Petro and his corrupt regime, colluding with drug traffickers, bear the political responsibility for this crime. The murder of Miguel Uribe should weigh heavily on their conscience.”
Fidanza stressed that Uribe’s assassination is not an isolated tragedy but part of a wider climate of political intimidation and violence in Colombia.
“When a political leader is killed for defending democratic values, the entire international community must react,” Fidanza continued. “The ECR Group stands firmly alongside all Colombians who reject violence and demand a future free from corruption and criminal collusion.”
The ECR Group will raise the issue in the European Parliament and call for a clear stance in defence of democratic forces in Colombia.
