ECR backs French call to list the Muslim Brotherhood network as an EU terrorist organisation

The European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament supports the call by the French Assemblée nationale to list the Muslim Brotherhood network on the EU’s list of terrorist organisations.

French MPs today adopted a resolution to this effect, reflecting growing concern across Europe about organised Islamist networks that seek to undermine democratic institutions and promote parallel structures incompatible with the rule of law.

The ECR Group will support steps in the European Parliament to advance this initiative, including calling for a debate and a parliamentary resolution urging the Commission and the Council to proceed with the listing, in line with the legal criteria and the evidence available.

Nicola Procaccini, ECR Co-Chairman, said:

“France is right to call for the Muslim Brotherhood network to be listed at EU level. Protecting democracy also means recognising when organised movements seek to subvert it from within. Europe must act with clarity and determination to defend the constitutional order and social cohesion of European Member States.”

Patryk Jaki, ECR Co-Chairman, added:

“This vote reflects a broad awareness in France that Islamist political networks cannot be treated as ordinary civil society actors. Europe must investigate the Brotherhood’s front organisations, ensure full transparency of foreign funding, and make sure EU money never ends up supporting structures that work against our democratic way of life.”

Marion Maréchal, Leader of the French ECR delegation, said:

“Today’s vote in the French Assemblée nationale is an important step forward in confronting the organised Islamist networks of the Muslim Brotherhood in France and across Europe. For many years, we have warned of the political project they pursue and of the pressure they exert to silence those who expose it. We will now carry this call to the European level by seeking a debate and a resolution in the European Parliament. This is a vital issue for our security, our freedoms and the future of European civilisation.”

The ECR Group has consistently called for a firm and clear-eyed approach to Islamist extremism, foreign-funded influence networks and ideological movements that exploit democratic freedoms to weaken the democratic order from within. The French resolution sends an important political signal that Europe must no longer turn a blind eye to organised structures operating under religious, cultural or associative cover while advancing a political project fundamentally at odds with European constitutional principles.
