ECR calls on EU to confront persecution of Christians in Nigeria

The European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament has called on the European Union to support concrete efforts to protect vulnerable communities in Nigeria.

Ahead of the vote on the ECR-initiated resolution, Arkadiusz Mularczyk, ECR Coordinator in the Subcommittee on Human Rights, said during the debate in Strasbourg:

“In June 2026, a brutal attack was carried out against the Christian community in the village of Kawel in Nigeria. Dozens of people lost their lives, many were injured, and the entire village was destroyed.”

“This was not an isolated incident, but rather part of a broader, recurring pattern of Christian persecution in the region: attacks on farmers, churches, schools, and clergy. Despite repeated warnings, the Nigerian authorities have failed to provide protection, and the perpetrators continue to enjoy impunity.”

Mularczyk also criticised the European Union’s response, warning that the religious dimension of the violence must not be ignored.

“The reaction of the European Union remains vastly insufficient. The official line of the European Union, including statements by the High Representative Kaja Kallas, avoids clearly defining these events as the persecution of Christians. Instead, it focuses on complex factors: land conflicts between farmers and herders, climate change, and the activities of bandits and terrorists.

“The foundations of Europe are Christian. Therefore, we cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of millions of Christians worldwide, for years the most persecuted religious group.”
