ECR Group Co-Chairmen Legutko and Procaccini meet Giorgia Meloni in Rome

ECR Group Co-Chairmen Legutko and Procaccini after meeting Giorgia Meloni: "We must break the ideological monopoly of the left in the European Union"

The ECR Group Co-Chairmen Nicola Procaccini and Prof Ryszard Legutko were today received at Palazzo Chigi by the President of the European Conservative Party, Giorgia Meloni.

The main topic of discussion was plans for further cooperation and expansion of the centre-right and conservative ECR Group, whose core is made up of the Polish delegation of the Law and Justice Party and Meloni’s Brothers of Italy.

“President Meloni won a spectacular victory in the Italian elections and her government enjoys very high public support. She is our most important ally. The cooperation between Warsaw and Rome should be the foundation for further expansion of our alliance in Europe and the defence of the common values we hold close to us, such as faith, family and cultural identity. It is only through joint action that we can try to break the ideological monopoly of the Left, which prevails in the European Union today, and be an audible voice of opposition” stressed Polish ECR Co-Chairman Ryszard Legutko.

His fellow Italian Co-Chair Nicola Procaccini, added: “We centre-right conservatives are the ones who want to defend the founding treaties of the European Union. It is important to understand what pro-European really means. The Left has managed to change the meaning of the word, which now goes against the original meaning and spirit of the EU treaties.

“Pro-European in fact means that the very core of our nations’ interests cannot be subordinated to a sort of European superstate. The democratic basis of the EU is founded on the Member States’ national democracies — in all their diversity, which must not be weakened by the EU but, on the contrary, strengthened.”

Prof Legutko, who is also head of the Law and Justice delegation in Brussels, pointed out: “It is necessary to continue our cooperation at various levels and to work out a concrete plan for further action in the coming months.”

The issue of aid to Ukraine was also discussed. According to Prof Legutko, “the future of the whole of Europe and the Western world is at stake in the war in Ukraine”.
