In light of the recent Russian bombing of civilian targets in Ukraine, the European Parliament will discuss whether Russia should be classified as a terrorist state.
Swedish MEP Charlie Weimers tabled the motion for a debate on behalf of the conservative ECR group on Monday. Ahead of the debate, Weimers said: “Terror is an integral part of the Russian war strategy. We believe it is overdue to declare Russia a sponsor of terrorism and that it is time to give up the illusion that one could still negotiate with Putin or that one could convince him to stop the conflict.”
The corresponding resolution is to be voted at the November II session in Strasbourg.
In the conference of the seven group leaders, the proposal of the ECR Group to put the issue on the agenda was initially rejected. However, the plenary of MEPs disagreed with 201 votes in favour, 99 against and 61 abstentions.
