ECR MEPs call for an end to animal testing globally

Today ECR MEPs voted to call on the EU to spearhead a global ban on animal testing for cosmetics

Today ECR MEPs voted to call on the EU to spearhead a global ban on animal testing for cosmetics.

The European Parliament’s Environment committee backed the call today and has also asked the European Commission to ensure the EU’s current ban on the sale of cosmetics tested on animals is fully enforced. In 2013 the EU banned the sale of cosmetics which have been tested on animals. However, 80% of the world still allows such testing to take place.

ECR Environment Co-ordinator, Julie Girling MEP, who co-signed the call said: “It’s hard to believe that a majority of countries still permit cosmetic testing on animals. The EU has been standard bearer on animal welfare and has strict rules prohibiting animal testing – we now want to see this atrocious practice ended globally. Today’s vote is a clear message from the European Parliament to the UN that more needs to be done to encourage the banning of animal testing worldwide.”
