The ECR Group welcomes the European Parliament's recognition of the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) for energy security and grid stability.
In a resolution adopted today in Strasbourg, MEPs call for a strategy for the deployment of SMRs in the EU. The file takes into account regional needs and economic sectors and establishes guidelines for planning, licensing, regulation and safety. The Parliament also calls on the EU to maintain technological leadership in the global SMR market.
ECR shadow Rob Roos said after the vote: “A historic moment. This is the first pro-nuclear resolution adopted by the European Parliament in this mandate. Small modular reactors can make an important contribution to the stability of Europe’s energy supply. The resolution is a step towards revitalising nuclear energy in the Union as a whole. If we want affordable, reliable and clean energy, nuclear energy is simply the only option”.
SMRs are a type of nuclear reactor smaller in size and power than traditional nuclear power plants. They are designed to be safer, more efficient and less costly. SMRs can be used for a variety of applications, including power generation, industrial heat and water desalination. Their modular design allows for scalability and easier integration into existing energy infrastructures.
The report was adopted with 409 votes in favour, 173 against and 31 abstentions.
