From 2024 on, Europeans will enjoy the benefits of a single USB-C standard charger for mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, handheld video game consoles, portable navigation systems and e-readers. From 2026 on, the same will apply for laptops.
Speaking in plenary ahead of the vote in the European Parliament, ECR Shadow Rapporteur Kosma Złotowski said:
“By unifying the charging standard, the use of chargers will be made easier and cheaper while the production of electro-waste and the consumption of rare metals will be reduced.”
The ECR Group supported the project from the beginning and advocated for an extension of the list of devices that will be equipped with a USB-C port. However, the Conservatives and Reformists also pointed out that consumers need to be thoroughly informed about the technical restrictions and limited suitability of certain devices as not every charger will be ideal for every type of device. They also ensured that consumers who chose so can still acquire a charger for new devices.
Speaking after the vote, Złotowski added:
“The graphic labelling system we proposed to the Commission will help consumers find the charger that best suits their needs. We also made sure that consumers are able to choose to buy a new device with or without a charger as long as possible.”
