EU Council’s good intentions not enough, says ECR Group Co-Chairman Raffaele Fitto

MEP Raffaele Fitto, Co-Chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, has commented on the outcome of the EU Council meeting, taking stock of the COVID-19 epidemiological situation.

He demanded that more effort be put into the supply of vaccines, compliance with contracts, production and logistics, reciprocity and proportionality with third countries.

Co-Chairman Raffaele Fitto (ECR):

“Last Wednesday, during the debate on the preparations for the European Council meeting, we, the ECR Group, asked for clear answers.

“Unfortunately, once again, the European Council summit has provided only good intentions nothing more. The only thing that is clear is that restrictions and limitations will continue to be imposed on European citizens and businesses in the coming weeks.

“The time has come for someone in Brussels to apologise to millions of European citizens for the unacceptable delays in the vaccination campaign and to take responsibility for these disastrous agreements on the supply of vaccines.

“On the other hand, we highlighted the need to continue to support our economies, and to foster the conditions for a strong and lasting recovery. To this end, we take note of the commitments around the internal market, digital transition, industrial strategy and economic governance, and hope that they will be followed by rapid and efficient action to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of European industry.”
