The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group sees the adoption of the EU–US trade package as a clear step towards greater stability and predictability in transatlantic trade relations.
For the ECR Group, the result underlines the importance of providing Europe’s businesses with certainty and a stable framework for trade, particularly at a time of economic uncertainty.
Speaking in plenary, Daniele Polato, ECR Coordinator in the Committee on International Trade, said:
“In this House, we know that there are different views regarding the United States. On one side, there is ideology, polemics, criticism, and a kind of 1970s-style anti-Americanism. On the other side, there are those of us who instead want to work on what unites us rather than what divides us.”
“We must send a message of responsibility that provides certainty to our businesses and our laboratories. We want the vote on these agreements to be a signal of a fresh start. We want a new phase to open in relations with the United States, which remains a crucial partner for trade and European security.
“Businesses do not have time to lose, especially in a delicate phase like the one we are living through. What is needed is certainty; what is needed is stability. This is the direction we want to take. This is what businesses and workers are asking of us. This is the right choice for Europe.”
ECR MEP Veronika Vrecionová, Rapporteur for the opinion of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, said:
“Concluding trade agreements is crucial for the European Union — for our businesses, for jobs, and for our competitiveness. An agreement on tariff quotas with the United States is not ideal, but a tariff war with the United States is the last thing we need in today’s complicated times. We export industrial products and cars, while they supply us with technology and energy.”
“Our businesses and farmers need certainty and predictability in our mutual trade relations. European farmers are among the best in the world and must have fair conditions both at home and on the global market. Therefore, our goal must be to create a lasting trade agreement with the United States.”
The deal was approved with 417 votes in favour, 154 against and 71 abstentions.
