“I believe space is one of the most important things where real added value of cooperation at the European level should be envisaged. Probably no member state has enough technical, economical nor personal capacities for such a sophisticated infrastructure with huge economic spin-off.

“I was personally involved in the

Parliamentary resolution on space market uptake

adopted in June. That is why I am glad to see as a positive message for our future cooperation that the Commission has taken a lot on board in its strategy.

“There is huge potential for the European space projects Galileo, EGNOS and Copernicus, and a chance for our citizens and businesses to benefit from them. We need to attract private investment to allow our companies and namely SMEs and start-ups to develop and commercialise new applications and services based on space data.

“EU has its EGNOS system, which improves already today the GPS positioning signal for instance in air traffic management. The initial Galileo services will be available soon and I believe that by reaching the fully operable Galileo constellation, we will experience positive impact on our daily lives in numerous areas, not only through the applications in our mobile phones and other devices. To give an example, the top accuracy, reliability and speed will be the key elements for improving ‘search & rescue’ and other safety services.

“Similarly, an enormous amount of earth observation data from the European Copernicus programme should be disseminated through platforms and thus serve as fuel for further innovation and growth. Let me remind that the space industry and R&D activities are already now counting for hundreds of thousands of jobs across Europe and this trend should be further encouraged.

“While there is a large consensus on Galileo and Copernicus, the newly announced EU’s programmes SST and Govsatcom going beyond intergovernmental setting might prove to be more problematic. Having said that, I broadly endorse the Space strategy for Europe and I am looking forward to its successful implementation.”
