For the ECR Group, continued support for Ukraine is both a humanitarian necessity and an investment in Europe’s own security.
As Russia continues its attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, millions of Ukrainians remain dependent on humanitarian assistance.
Speaking during Monday’s European Parliament debate on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, ECR MEP Małgorzata Gosiewska said:
“The humanitarian situation in Ukraine today is tragic. Nearly 11 million people are in need of humanitarian aid. Millions have lost their homes, their safety and their normal lives as a result of Russian aggression. This is a total war in which not only military positions are destroyed, but also cities, homes, hospitals and civilian infrastructure.”
Gosiewska warned that allowing the war and the suffering it causes to fade into the background would ultimately endanger Europe itself. She said:
“We cannot allow the tragedy of this war to become commonplace for Europe. We must support a fighting Ukraine so that Western Europe, through indifference, does not experience what has become a trauma for millions of people affected by the ‘Russian world’.
“Indifference is not neutrality. Sooner or later, we will all pay the price for such an attitude.”
Gosiewska also questioned why Europe continues to allow Russian goods and energy to reach its market while Moscow wages its war against Ukraine.
“We should ask why Russian fertilisers are still being sold on the European market, harming European producers, or why Lukoil stations are still supplying Russian fuel to Europe. We cannot claim to stand firmly with Ukraine while continuing business that helps sustain the Russian economy,” she concluded.
