To celebrate the arrival of spring, ECR MEP Angel Dzhambazki has issued a message to mark a Bulgarian tradition of ‘Grand Mother Marta’ day.

“Today Bulgaria celebrates the arrival of Spring and welcomes “Grand Mother Marta”, who distributes Martenitsa. Wearing Martenitsa is an ancient Bulgarian national tradition, which symbolises the spring arrival. The Martenitsa is a small piece of adornment, usually made of white and red yarn or cotton and is a symbol of health, fertility, happiness and purity. Traditionally the Martenitsa is placed on 1st March and is worn until the beginning of the spring or the first time someone sees a stork or a swallow. Afterwards the Martenitsa is placed on a blossomed tree or under a stone.

Wish you all to be healthy, happy and prosperous.
