Kožušník meets with a representative of the Ecuadorian opposition

This week Czech MEP Edvard Kožušník met with José Luis Guerrero Martínez, political asylee from Ecuador accused in his country of sabotage and terrorism.

According to Guerrero, the current president of Ecuador Rafael Correa is continuing transformation of the political and economic system of Ecuador towards authoritarian leftist regime, repeatedly seeking to suppress the activities of the media and opposition voices. Guerrero, along with his brother Pablo, was accused of alleged sabotage and terrorism in Ecuador, thus facing up to 12 years in prison. “I greatly appreciate the Czech judicial system which, despite repeated requests by the Ecuadorian government, refused to extradite me to Ecuador, and gave me and my brother asylum,” said the asylee during the interview with the Czech MEP.

Kožušník listened with interest to the life story of Guerrero and got to know the violations of human rights in this Latin American country. “I am very surprised by the political situation in Ecuador, especially at a time when the European Union is negotiating a trade agreement with Ecuador,” said Kožušník, who is a coordinator for the relations with the countries of Latin America on behalf of the European Conservatives and Reformists in the European Parliament.

Kožušník has been attempting to mediate cooperation between the countries of Latin America and the Czech Republic on a long-term basis and is dedicated to the issue of human rights in Cuba.
