Legutko: Another missed opportunity by the EP for constructive debate on the future of Europe

Co-Chairman of the ECR Group Ryszard Legutko MEP, pointed out that this was yet another missed opportunity to discuss much needed reform of the EU, and address the very real and genuine concerns of European citizens.

Today Polish PM appeared before the European Parliament’s plenary to discuss the Future of Europe.

Co-Chairman of the ECR Group Ryszard Legutko MEP, pointed out that this was yet another missed opportunity to discuss much needed reform of the EU, and address the very real and genuine concerns of European citizens. Instead of discussing the many challenges facing the EU today, and talking about the future of EU cooperation, instead, the debate was marked as yet another opportunity for the European Parliament to lecture Member States on their domestic political situation.

Speaking in the debate, Professor Legutko said:

“This chamber is completely resistant to listening to arguments, you hear heckling, booing. That’s the usual reaction. There is a deep refusal to ‘KNOW’ in this chamber.

“You were mentioning democratic awakening, but at the same time there is an increasing number of people saying the EU is going in the wrong direction.

“I suggest the parliament starts putting its own house in order first, before you finger point at Poland. MEPs need to make this house a more open and receptive place for all points of view to be debated and heard.”
