Legutko & Procaccini: A clear vision of the EU’s future from the Conservatives and Reformists

Today, the second of three ECR Group study days in the European Parliament, taking place in Warsaw and ending tomorrow, was opened by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Their speeches were introduced by the two Co-Chairmen of the ECR Group, Professor Ryszard Legutko and Nicola Procaccini.

“The future of Europe is the priority issue of the coming months. Much depends on what we can achieve. We are optimistic about the prospects for the upcoming European elections,” said Legutko, who also pointed out that “Poland and Italy are now known to have very efficient governments. This efficiency is largely based on the sovereignty of states, which is linked to responsibility. This direct responsibility is lacking in the European institutions, especially in the European Commission.”

Respect for the sovereignty of nation states and the principle of subsidiarity are fundamental objectives that the ECR Group has set itself. Only in this way can the functioning of the EU be guaranteed in the long term.

In his speech, Nicola Procaccini said: “We, the European Conservatives and Reformists, have a clear vision for the future of the EU. We want to return Europe to its original conception: a union of peoples and nations, doing some important things together, but doing them well and efficiently, respecting the principle of subsidiarity. Our main objective is to build a future majority in the European Parliament as an alternative to the current one, and we hope to increase the weight of conservative governments in the European Council as well. A big change, one which we hope will happen soon.”
