MEPs refuse to grant discharge to the Coucil

For the third time in a row, MEPs did not approve the Council´s financial management as the institution failed to properly participate in the discharge (signing off) process.

For the third time in a row, MEPs did not approve the Council´s financial management as the institution failed to properly participate in the discharge (signing off) process. Mrs Češková MEP, the ECR rapporteur, hopes that the vote might motivate the Council to start an open dialogue with the Budgetary Control Committee.

Mrs Češková said: “The parliament is responsible directly to the citizens of the Members States. That is why MEPs must be able to provide information to the taxpayers on how their money is spent by every EU institution. It is therefore an automatic obligation of every institution to provide transparent information on their financial management.”

“It is not clear what the remuneration of the Council staff is; we do not know the real costs of the Residence Palace which the Council has purchased. Until we get all this information, we can only refuse to grant discharge to the Council.”
