In response to Roberta Metsola’s remarks at the 2026 Rimini Meeting, where the European Parliament President endorsed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s call for more common-sense solutions at European level, ECR Group Co-Chairman Nicola Procaccini said:
“We strongly welcome President Metsola’s endorsement of Giorgia Meloni’s call for common-sense solutions and for Europe to do less, but do it better. These are not merely ideas we support; they are the two slogans that define the ECR Group. It is encouraging to see them gaining broader recognition across Europe.
“Common sense should become the guiding principle of European policymaking from the outset, and it should not be limited to correcting individual mistakes after the damage has already been done. Europe will only regain its competitiveness when it legislates less, takes a long-term view, respects the principle of subsidiarity and gives businesses the freedom to find the solutions that work best for them.
“More and more ordinary families are struggling with the pressures of everyday life. Europe therefore needs policies rooted in common sense and focused first and foremost on the needs of its citizens.
“Common sense must also guide our approach to new technologies. Europe must look beyond short-term political calculations and once again become a continent of economic growth, innovation and opportunity.
“Common sense also applies to migration. As President Metsola rightly emphasised, Europe must remain firm, restore public confidence and demonstrate that its borders and laws are under control. Only a Europe that is secure, competitive and trusted by its citizens will be able to face the challenges ahead.”
