ECR MEP Prof Karol Karski welcomes that the ad-hoc visit of the European Parliament’s subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) to Israel and the Palestinian territories scheduled to take place from 17 to 21 July has been called off.
Prof Karski, who was supposed to take part on behalf of the ECR Group, had earlier expressed strong opposition to the programme of the trip and demanded that the meetings with representatives of EU-listed terrorist organisations and those affiliated with them be cancelled. “It is simply unacceptable for representatives of the European Parliament to meet with terrorists and their supporters. Terrorism and support for it can never be legitimised or accepted”, Prof Karski said.
Prof Karski continued:
“The EU’s position on terrorism and the need to combat it is clear and unequivocal. It would have been of particular concern if the Subcommittee on Human Rights – a committee that is supposed to protect human rights, including the fundamental right to life – had met with murderers and terrorists or their representatives, legitimising them as interlocutors as a result.”
