The ECR Group is convinced that a new regulation on the protection of geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products, adopted today in the European Parliament, will bring significant benefits to both producers and consumers.
“Currently, EU legislation only protects geographical indications for agricultural products and wines, while there is no mechanism to protect, for example, products such as Murano glass or Solingen knives. With this regulation, artisans will finally be able to certify the link between quality and geographical origin”, said ECR shadow rapporteur and vice-president of the Legal Affairs Committee Raffaele Stancanelli.
Mr Stancanelli continued:
“This regulation will make it easier for consumers to recognise the authenticity of products and will have a positive economic impact on SMEs, boosting their competitiveness.
“Although the text negotiated with the Council is not as clear as it could be on the definition of production stages and the relationship between geographical indications and trademarks, we are particularly pleased that some of our amendments on protection against unfair commercial practices and the fight against counterfeiting, including online, have been accepted.
“If we are able to promote and defend our local traditions, creativity and know-how, while preserving our identity, we will be able to meet the challenges of an increasingly globalised world.”
