Events such as the Jew-baiting in Amsterdam following a football match last week are sadly no longer a rarity in Europe.
In a debate MEP Bert-Jan Ruissen said: “The deplorable events in Amsterdam are not isolated incidents. They fit into a pattern of increasing hatred of Jews and are strongly fuelled by Muslim extremists and left-wing activists, an ominous coalition of groups that together have created a particularly explosive anti-Semitic climate.”
Ruissen called on EU member states to take a series of coordinated measures: “We cannot stand idly by while the Jewish community is increasingly pushed into a corner. Organisations sympathetic to Hamas, such as Samidoun, should be placed on the European list of terrorist organisations. Demonstrations where there is a risk of anti-Semitic statements should be banned”, he said.
Ruissen also called for more action against online anti-Semitism and for anti-Semitic migrants to be turned back at borders. “Let’s be very clear at our borders. Anti-Semitism has no place in Europe. Those who want a residence permit must show that they support our values”, Ruissen concluded.
