The Bureau of the European Conservatives & Reformists Group ( ECR) in the European Parliament visited Bahrain 4-5 March 2018.

Geoffrey Van Orden, British Conservative MEP and leader of the Delegation commented:

“The ECR Delegation is delighted to be in Bahrain and expresses its grateful thanks to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman al Khalifa and his government. We attach importance to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bahrain and admiration for its regime of tolerance and good inter-religious relations.

“We wish to see enhanced relations between Bahrain and the countries we represent as well as the European Union, conscious that there is sometimes lack of understanding and balance in some of the statements from EU institutions.

“Our Delegation reiterated its support for Bahrain’s counter-terrorism efforts and its commitment to values of moderation as well as its robust role in combating extremism. Our own authorities might learn from the measures to educate imams and to prevent extremist messages being transmitted through mosques.”

“Discussions also included geopolitical issues, including the Gulf crisis, the negative Iranian interference in the region and the positive changes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

“Our Delegation met leaders of the various religious communities in Bahrain and expressed its great respect for Bahrain’s unique model of religious diversity and freedom of religion in the region. The Delegation also met the Supreme Council of Women and learned more about the Bahraini women’s role in society and expressed its support to Bahraini women and all their efforts in further enhancing the opportunities for women in the Kingdom.
