The ECR Group in the European Parliament expresses its continued concerns over the EU’s COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy. During today’s plenary debate with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, several ECR MEPs demanded greater transparency from the Commission regarding the terms of the contracts it negotiated with the pharmaceutical sector and to explain why the vaccine rollout has been unacceptably slow across Europe.
“Europeans trusted the European Union, and the Member States trusted the European Commission that they would effectively carry out the vaccination process,” said ECR MEP Beata Szydło. “Our future, health and economy depend on it - all that binds us in the idea of the European Union.”
The Commission’s single-most important task now is to effectively enforce the contracts it signed so that each Member State receives the number of vaccines it needs as quickly as possible.
ECR MEP Joanna Kopcinska concludes: “We are not innovative enough when it comes to production in Europe. The EU needs to level up and ensure secure access to medicines for the whole continent.”
