On Friday 26 February, Bucharest, Romania, will host the fourth event in the ECR Group's conference on the future of Europe: "Europe's Future - A New Hope".
From March 2020 onwards, the Covid-19 pandemic has presented the EU with a number of severe challenges. In its current form, a centralised and bureaucratic Europe has shown itself to be incapable of providing quick or efficient solutions to these issues.
The ECR Future of Europe Tour promotes a solution to this problem, by promoting the concept of a Europe of sovereign nations cooperating together. A Europe where decisions are taken closer to home, not from Brussels. A Europe where capitals take back control. Our Bucharest event will lay out a roadmap on how to achieve this, pushing for the rebirth of national democracies and a mandate to carry out the true will of the people.
Europe’s Future: A New Hope, Bucharest will feature ECR Group Co-Chairmen Ryszard Legutko and Raffaele Fitto, President of the ECR Institutional Policy Working Group Prof. Zdzisław Krasnodębski, in addition to ECR MEPs Cristian Terhes, Angel Dzhambazki, Romanian politicians and lawyers.
Anyone is invited to stream the event live on Friday 26 February at 18:00 CET and pose questions to the panellists directly in the YouTube Livestream chat, or by tweeting with the hashtag #AskResetEU.
The ECR Group in the European Parliament launched the European tour on the Future of the European Union in December 2020. The tour takes the form of a series of live broadcasts from 15 European capitals, in which citizens of European Member States are consulted. Warsaw, Sofia and Zagreb have already played host to the travelling conference.
The Conference on the Future of Europe, announced by the President of the European Commission, is a challenge for all European political movements that do not share the Federalist vision. The so-called pro-European federalists claim that the future is either ‘more Europe or no Europe’.
The ECR Group does not believe in extremes. There is a middle way. It is time to restore the ideal of a Europe that respects the sovereignty of our national democracies. It is time to rebuild our community of European states – a Europe of mutual respect, cooperation and solidarity. It is time for a new hope for Europe.
This is why the ECR Group launched its European Tour; to consider more effective and durable alternatives to European centralisation.
The Group aims to show that a new way can save Europe from the clutches of a federalist ideology; an ideology that risks rolling back all the progress made by sovereign, national democracies working together over many years as equal partners for the common good.
