On Saturday 8 May, Stockholm. Sweden, will host the sixth event in the ECR Group's conference on the future of Europe: "Europe's Future - A New Hope".
The ECR Group can see the EU developing into a supranational union, accumulating more and more power over policies that are better handled at the national level or through bilateral cooperation between individual states. Many citizens are unsettled to see the EU becoming more involved in their daily lives. We need well-informed debates. We need to be critical of the European Union to protect the values and fundamental rights in our countries, without anti-European or pro-European labels being thrown around. We believe that self-governing nations are the keystone of international cooperation.
The European Union is proof of how successful cooperation between European countries can be. We should not change a system that works through further centralisation.
Europe’s Future: A New Hope, Stockholm will feature ECR Group Co-Chairman Ryszard Legutko, President of the ECR Institutional Policy Working Group Prof. Zdzisław Krasnodębski, ECR MEPs Peter Lundgren, Bert-Jan Ruissen, Assita Kanko, Leader of the Sweden Democrats Jimmie Åkesson, and other leading politicians from Sweden.
Anyone is invited to stream the event live on Saturday 8 May at 17:00 CET and pose questions to the panellists directly in the YouTube Livestream chat, or by tweeting with the hashtag #AskResetEU.
The ECR Group in the European Parliament launched the European tour on the Future of the European Union in December 2020. The tour takes the form of a series of live broadcasts from 15 European capitals, in which citizens of European Member States are consulted. Warsaw, Sofia, Zagreb, Bucharest and The Hague have already hosted the travelling conference.
The Conference on the Future of Europe, announced by the President of the European Commission, is a challenge for all European political movements that do not share the Federalist vision. The so-called pro-European federalists claim that the future is either ‘more Europe or no Europe’.
The ECR Group does not believe in extremes. There is a middle ground. It is time to restore the ideal of a Europe that respects the sovereignty of our national democracies. It is time to rebuild our community of European states – a Europe of mutual respect, cooperation and solidarity. It is time for a new hope for Europe.
The Group aims to show that a new way can save Europe from the clutches of a federalist ideology; an ideology that risks rolling back all the progress made by sovereign, national democracies working together over many years as equal partners for the common good.
