On Thursday the 1st of April, The Hague in the Netherlands will host the fifth event in the ECR Group's conference on the future of Europe: "Europe's Future - A New Hope".
Crisis after crisis, the EU gains more competencies and a larger budget. Whether it is the financial crisis, climate crisis or the more recent pandemic - it appears federalists welcome every new problem as a justification for strengthening EU-powers. However, there is a limit to expanding the EU at the expense of national competencies. Certain things are better dealt with at the national level.
A realistic middle ground between a federal EU and no EU is that of a more flexible EU. It is high time to consider the question: how far will we go with European integration? And if we feel we have reached a limit, what alternatives are there?
Europe’s Future: A New Hope, The Hague will feature ECR Group Co-Chairman Raffaele Fitto, President of the ECR Institutional Policy Working Group Prof. Zdzisław Krasnodębski, in addition to ECR MEPs Bert-Jan Ruissen, Cristian Terheş, Ruža Tomašić, Dutch policymakers and businessmen.
Anyone is invited to stream the event live on Thursday the 1st of April at 19:30 CET and pose questions to the panellists directly in the YouTube Livestream chat, or by tweeting with the hashtag #AskResetEU.
The ECR Group in the European Parliament launched the European tour on the Future of the European Union in December 2020. The tour takes the form of a series of live broadcasts from 15 European capitals, in which citizens of European Member States are consulted. Warsaw, Sofia, Zagreb and Bucharest have already hosted the travelling conference.
The Conference on the Future of Europe, announced by the President of the European Commission, is a challenge for all European political movements that do not share the Federalist vision. The so-called pro-European federalists claim that the future is either ‘more Europe or no Europe’.
The ECR Group does not believe in extremes. There is a middle ground. It is time to restore the ideal of a Europe that respects the sovereignty of our national democracies. It is time to rebuild our community of European states – a Europe of mutual respect, cooperation and solidarity. It is time for a new hope for Europe.
The Group aims to show that a new way can save Europe from the clutches of a federalist ideology; an ideology that risks rolling back all the progress made by sovereign, national democracies working together over many years as equal partners for the common good.
