The EU Digital Covid Certificate is a crucial step towards saving the tourist season

The ECR Group in the European Parliament welcomes the agreement on the brand new EU Digital Covid Certificate as essential for saving the tourist season of 2021 and the recovery of the wider tourism sector.

After long and intense negotiations, the Council and the European Parliament reached a political agreement: Starting from 1 July, European citizens holding the new Certificate that proves either a vaccination, a negative PCR or antigen test, or a recent full recovery from a Covid infection will once more be able to move freely across European borders.

Italian MEP Nicola Procaccini, ECR negotiator, said:

“The good news for every citizen longing for summer holidays is that there will not be any additional restrictions crossing European borders from another Member State, except for compelling reasons dictated by the need to protect public health.

At least €100 million from the EU budget has been allocated to purchase Covid tests, ensuring millions of free of charge tests for citizens who need it most, such as cross-border workers. I am very satisfied.

“Thanks to the commitment of the European Conservatives and Reformists, the Certificate will no longer be called the ‘Digital Green Certificate’ and will be in place for no longer than one year.”
