10th - 14th February: EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, EU strategy to put an end to FGM, proposed mandate for negotiations for a new partnership with the UK.

EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement

On Wednesday, the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement will be voted on in plenary. It removes nearly all tariffs on goods between the EU and Vietnam and it’s clearly the most ambitious and comprehensive Free Trade Agreement that the EU has ever concluded with a middle-income country. Rapporteur and ECR MEP Geert Bourgeois strongly believes that the trade agreement will have a positive impact on the reform process in the country and offers progress in the field of labour and human rights through a clear commitment from the Vietnamese authorities.

An EU strategy to put an end to female genital mutilation around the world

On the initiative of ECR MEP Assita Kanko, the parliament is going to vote on a resolution to put an end to female genital mutilation (FGM) around the world. The ECR Group is pleased that the initiative gained a lot of support and has resulted in a resolution tabled by six political groups.

Proposed mandate for negotiations for a new partnership with the UK

The ECR Group is in favour of a pragmatic approach that avoids any distortion of the market in terms of competition and supports the ambition of zero tariffs and zero quota in a deep and comprehensive trade deal.
