2014 budget

The budgets committee will vote on the EU’s 2014 budget, the first under the new 7-year framework. ECR budgets spokesman Richard Ashworth supports the reduction in commitments agreed by the Council and will be supporting their overall figures while trying to focus spending more on those areas that add value, such as spending on hi-tech research and innovation.

Vote Wednesday and Thursday

Sakharov shortlist

The foreign affairs and development committees will vote on a shortlist for this year’s Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought. ECR foreign affairs spokesman Charles Tannock has nominated Malala Yousafzai on behalf of the ECR.
Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani school pupil and education activist from Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. She was shot last October on a school bus, seeing her eventually moved to the UK for treatment. She has since become a global figure speaking out in favour of women’s rights and education rights. Shortlist decision: Monday afternoon

Moscow bubble

ECR MEP Marek Migalski, member of the Delegation to the EU-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, will host Russian activists, journalists and oppositionists at the European Parliament. The debate entitled “Moscow Bubble. State of Democracy in Russia”, will include leading opposition politicians, journalists and activists.
