EU/US data protection
The parliament will vote on whether to give assent to an agreement between the EU and USA which gives an additional layer of protection when personal data is transferred for the purposes of preventing or detecting serious crime and terrorism. The agreement sets out basic data protection principles like the use of data, limitations, rules on bulk transfers and rights to judicial redress.
ECR shadow rapporteur on the agreement Helga Stevens MEP believes it constitutes major progress in the effort to improve data protection without hindering the work of law enforcement services.

Defence Action Plan
The European Commission’s Defence Action Plan is expected mid-week. ECR security and defence coordinator Geoffrey Van Orden MEP will be scrutinising the proposals closely. He believes that European countries should concentrate on increasing defence spending and reaffirming their commitment to NATO, not establishing duplicate structures that could undermine the organisation that has been the cornerstone of our collective defence for more than 60 years.
