A Regulation for markets in Crypto Assets
On Monday, the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will vote on a regulatory framework for the EU’s markets in Crypto assets. The regulation is intended to regulate the European crypto market, which is currently not regulated at all meaning clients have no legal certainty and the market is open to money laundering. The ECR Group does not want to prohibit Bitcoin and other crypto currencies, but sees a need for fair conditions to be established for service providers like issuers or vendors on the one hand and customers on the other. The ECR Group still sees shortcomings and inconsistencies in the final compromise text, but believes that no better compromise can be found at this stage and therefore counts on making improvements during the trilogues.

EU Taxonomy
On Tuesday, the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will jointly debate the Commission proposal to include the nuclear sector and specific gas sectors in the so-called EU taxonomy. For the ECR Group, nuclear power is essential for a safe and stable supply of energy in Europe.

Condemning the persecution of minorities on the grounds of belief or religion
On Tuesday, the Committee on Foreign Affairs will vote on ECR MEP Karol Karski’s initiative report that condemns the persecution of minorities on the grounds of belief or religion. Violence against believers of different religions is a phenomenon that has become increasingly worrying in the past decade and is intensifying in more and more countries. For example, it is estimated that 340 million Christians experience high levels of persecution and discrimination. The report calls on the Council, the Commission, the European External Action Service and EU Member States for a multi-layered and multi-actor approach to protecting and promoting freedom of religion or belief.
