Better connect Eastern Europe while decoupling from Russia and Belarus
On Thursday, MEPs in the Transport Committee will vote on a revision of the EU’s guidelines for the development of the trans-European aviation, road, rail and waterway network. As transport infrastructure is the backbone of EU economic activity, renewed and updated EU legislation is needed to ensure the timely completion of three strategic layers of the transport infrastructure network: the core by 2030, the extended core by 2040 and the comprehensive networks by 2050. The main challenges to be addressed in the current revision are how to remove capacity bottlenecks, how to complete the remaining missing links, in particular on cross-border sections between Member States, as well as how to strengthen connections with Ukraine and Moldova. The ECR Group believes that the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) must properly connect all regions of the Union and that further attention must be paid to better connecting Eastern Europe with the rest of the EU.
