Electricity market should not discriminate against nuclear energy
The Industry, Research and Energy Committee will vote on Wednesday on a reformed Electricity Market Design. According to ECR shadow rapporteur Prof Zdzisław Krasnodębski, the EU should not hinder the development of new nuclear projects that constitute an important element of actual or planned energy security landscape for significant number of members states. Moreover, the current draft does not sufficiently update the rules on capacity mechanisms. As evidenced by 2022 energy crisis capacity there is a need for integrating capacity mechanisms as structural part of electricity market design. Security of supply cannot be taken for granted and legislation should allow for wider and smoother application of capacity mechanisms to support Members States where adequacy concerns persist.
