EDIP vote: Speed and efficiency sacrificed in Parliament’s position

On Thursday 24 April, the Committee on Security and Defence (SEDE) and the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) will vote on the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP), originally aimed at ensuring the timely availability and supply of defence products. The ECR remains not fully satisfied with the outcome of the Parliament’s internal work. The main objective of the Commission’s proposal was to produce defence products in Europe faster, in greater quantities and more efficiently. The two rapporteurs have made the objective of delivering more defence products in a short time secondary. The current position of strengthening the autonomy of the European defence industry at all costs does not represent the interests and urgent needs of all Member States, nor does it reflect the diversity of EU defence companies across the Union and their different ownership structures.
