New rules for genome editing

On Wednesday, the Environment Committee will vote on new rules for genome editing or ‘precision breeding’ techniques. These techniques will speed up the development of plant varieties that are more resistant to drought and pests. Investing in plant breeding is the most economical and environmentally friendly way of dealing with the consequences of climate change in agriculture. The ECR Group wants to help farmers with a broader and more innovative toolbox to produce enough food and feed for a growing population, despite increasing challenges.

A step towards less energy dependence on Russia

On Tuesday, the Industry, Research and Energy Committee will vote on a provisional agreement on the outcome of the recent trilogue negotiations on the gas and hydrogen package. The legislative package, consisting of a regulation and a directive, establishes a framework for the development of a dedicated hydrogen infrastructure, which will support the production of hydrogen across the Union and contribute to reducing emissions from sectors that are difficult to decarbonise, such as the steel or fertiliser sectors. The ECR Group believes that the package contains robust provisions aimed at increasing the Union’s energy security and diversifying imports by allowing Member States to ban the supply of natural gas from Russia and Belarus.
