Who should determine EU fisheries management plans?

On Monday, the Committee on Fisheries will vote on a mandate to start inter-institutional negotiations on a transposition of conservation and management measures adopted by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) into EU law. According to ECR rapporteur Ladislav Ilčić, it is worrying that the Commission is increasingly using the GFCM to take important decisions when it seems difficult to reach an agreement among the co-legislators. However, MEPs believe that the Commission should ensure real and full participation of the European Parliament in GFCM decisions. “We want to send a clear message that we can’t accept the Commission to bypass the European Parliament. This may be appropriate for certain technical recommendations, but not for entire management plans, such as the one for the Adriatic Sea. As for multi-annual plans, I think that each sea basin is unique and needs to be evaluated in detail. It is important to have a dialogue and take into account all stakeholders,” says Mr. Ilčić.

Final Plenary Session of the “Conference on the Future of Europe”

On Friday and Saturday, the plenary of the Conference on the Future of Europe will try to reach a consensus on the proposals of the nine working groups, which will then serve as the basis for the final report. ECR MEP Zdzisław Krasnodębski, who is representing the ECR Group at the Conference, believes that the process underlying the Conference on the Future of Europe has been vague, not genuinely democratic and in conflict with the architecture of the European Union as enshrined in the Treaties. The ECR Group has treated the Conference on the Future of Europe very seriously. We fear that the participants have been promised too much by the organisers and that unrealistic proposals that go against the Treaties will only end up frustrating Europeans and further distancing them from the European institutions.
