SHEIN finally comes to the European Parliament

On Tuesday afternoon, representatives from SHEIN, the global e-commerce platform, will meet with Members of the European Parliament in the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) Committee, after repeatedly declining previous invitations. The exchange of views will focus on online marketplaces and their compliance with existing EU product safety, consumer protection and digital platform rules, as IMCO Members examine how effectively these rules are being enforced within the single market.

On 26 November 2025, Parliament adopted a resolution highlighting the urgent problem of illegal and unsafe products sold to EU consumers via e-commerce platforms, particularly those based outside the EU. The resolution followed a scandal in France involving the online sale of child-like sex dolls and weapons, which exposed serious failures in platform oversight and enforcement of current legislation.

The EU already has a comprehensive regulatory framework in place to protect consumers and children from dangerous products sold online. The key challenge now is ensuring consistent and effective enforcement. European companies invest significant resources to comply with these rules in order to guarantee consumer safety and trust, and it is essential that global online marketplaces operating in the EU are held to the same standards and are not allowed to cut corners.

The ECR Group expects this exchange of views to focus on accountability, transparency and concrete commitments from online marketplaces, as well as on stronger enforcement of existing EU rules to ensure a fair and safe digital single market for consumers and businesses alike.

Exchange of views with NATO

On Monday afternoon, MEPs in the Security and Defence Committee will hold an exchange of views with Mark Rutte, Secretary General of NATO. The discussion comes at a crucial moment for Euro-Atlantic security. At a time of war on Europe’s borders and growing hybrid and drone threats, NATO remains the cornerstone of Europe’s collective defence.

The ECR Group will reiterate that European defence efforts should reinforce NATO, not replace it, and must be complementary rather than duplicative. For the ECR Group, NATO remains indispensable to European security and transatlantic stability and EU–NATO cooperation must deepen to strengthen the European pillar of the NATO.

India: Shaping a balanced agreement in Europe’s interest

EU and Indian leaders meet in New Delhi on 27 January for the EU–India Summit, with negotiations on a future free trade agreement gaining renewed momentum. Alongside deeper cooperation on security and defence, the summit aims to advance a partnership that strengthens Europe’s resilience and diversifies its global alliances.

The ECR Group supports closer EU–India ties and will work to help shape an agreement that is balanced, reciprocal and firmly anchored in Europe’s strategic interests. At the same time, a durable partnership requires clarity and trust, including an open dialogue on India’s continued engagement with Russia. The ECR will contribute constructively to building EU–India cooperation that reinforces both partners while safeguarding Europe’s industrial and economic foundations.

EU–US relations and recent developments

The Committee on Foreign Affairs will hold an exchange of views with Andrew Puzder, United States Ambassador to the EU, on transatlantic relations and recent developments. Recent developments, however, confirm that a non-escalatory, dialogue-first approach as consistently advocated by the ECR Group remains the responsible path to protect strategic partnership, economic cooperation and shared security interests.
