EU climate lawmakers must wake up
Scheduled for Monday in the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment are discussions with the Belgian Ministers for Health and Agriculture, providing an opportunity to debate their priorities for the Council Presidency, and an exchange of views with the Commission on progress towards the climate targets of 2030 and 2050. The 2019-2024 term has seen some of the most far-reaching climate legislation pass through the Parliament, the majority of which can be characterized by well-intentioned goals but poor implementation. For the ECR Group, the EU must take serious note of the social and economic consequences of its attempts at greening European and extra-EU economies, with a growing regulatory compliance burden felt across many industries and sectors. The Green Deal’s climate agenda must also account for the differing starting points of the Member States and be equitable, socially fair and economically inclusive, ensuring that no region or municipality is left behind.

Special European Council
On Wednesday, the Special European Council will discuss, among other things, the 50 billion euros for the Ukraine Facility that have been pledged but not yet released. The ECR Group stands firmly on the side of Ukraine, which continues to fight bravely against brutal Russian aggression. Brussels must honour its commitments, including the promised artillery ammunition and other aid. ECR Foreign Affairs Coordinator Anna Fotyga MEP states with a view to the meeting: “The EU will lose credibility if it fails to deliver on its promises. Words must be followed by deeds. Any further delay would be a further gain for the brutal aggressor Putin, who will not stop at Ukraine. The whole of Europe must stand together to stop Russian imperialism.”
