MEPs look at ECB policy in the light of current challenges

On Monday, the committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will hear the EU’s chief banking supervisor Ms Claudia Buch. Topics will include ECB supervisory activities, the banking union, and the state of play regarding EU banks’ retreat from Russia. For the ECR Group, it is important that banks have sufficient capital buffers to ensure the absorption of economic shocks and avoid bailouts by taxpayers. Johan Van Overtveldt MEP will take the floor on the ECR’s behalf.

Contain the outbreak of the Mpox virus!

On Wednesday, the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will discuss the ongoing spread of a new Mpox strain in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring countries. The ECR supports calls for swift political action to improve surveillance, testing, and vaccination efforts. It is imperative to contain the outbreak before it escalates into a global crisis.

Outgoing Commissioners take stock - ECR wants better cooperation with African countries

On Wednesday, Jutta Urpilainen, Commissioner for International Partnerships, and Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management, will appear before the Development Committee to sum up their term in office. Faced with the possibility of new epidemics such as the current outbreak of monkeypox, the need to combat illegal migration and terrorism, the need to improve the EU’s supply of raw materials to become less dependent on China, threats to geopolitical security, and the fight against climate change, the ECR Group believes that deeper, more pragmatic and non-patronising cooperation and better political dialogue with African countries is needed.

Parliament must not overlook climate finance challenges

Also on Wednesday, the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety will consider a resolution for the UN climate summit in Azerbaijan (COP29) that reaffirms the ambitious targets outlined in recent Parliament resolutions. In the opinion of the ECR Group, however, the resolution must also recognise the significant funding gaps in both European and global mitigation efforts to ensure these goals can be effectively achieved. The EU’s approach to reducing CO2 emissions has faced criticism for not adequately considering feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and energy security, leading to diminished public support and challenging economic conditions for European businesses and households. It is crucial to highlight these climate financing challenges in the text, as they should be a central focus of the upcoming negotiations in Baku.
